Default Did Fear 2 ever get a higher difficulty patch?

Hey, just wondering if Monolith has ever done anything that significantly increases the difficulty of the single player campaign? I still haven't finished it yet because of loss of interest (too easy), but I would love to experience the rest of the game if it offers more of a challenge.

The patch that did that came out a long time ago.

Yeah, anyone who's connected to STEAM would have received that patch.

Connected to steam? Does the same apply for Xbox 360 users who are not connected to steam but rather xbox live?

Also, is there actually a new difficulty mode?

It does apply to those connected to Xbox live. It does not add a new difficulty, but it makes Hard Mode harder

Harder than Hard, or even the first game's Extreme. Anyone who's managed to finish 813's odyssey or Becket's ordeal without using their supernaturally enhanced reflexes is a hardier person than me.

Hard mode post patch is insane.

There's Hard, then there's Extreme, then there's Rape, and then finally there's Rape Without Lube. FEAR 2 Hard post-patch is the last one.

I have been playing video games for a long time, I am an experienced shooter gal, but I STILL have trouble with F2 Hard. Anyone who says it is still too easy is full of shit. Simple.

I swear to god on one play of Reborn it took a Replica 2 pistol shots to bring me down to nothing from full health. And yes, it was the part where you're stripped of your weapons and have to melee a patrolling Replica. Pissed me OFF, that part did.

The people who are complaining are people like me: they have not received the patch yet.

Also, that's what you should expect when you're charging a super-soldier without any armor. Just be glad that Monolith gifted the protagonists with super-speed, and that they could absorb several shots with their bullet-proof vests rather than getting instantly incapacitated once someone as much as breathes on them.

Which protagonist do you think had the roughest time?

Wow really? That's crazy.. was that the same patch that changed the health icon? Because if it is, I don't ever remember noticing any change in the gameplay as I was currently playing on hard.. maybe you have to start a new game for it to take effect?

Also, I was not playing reborn (I don't even have it) -- just the regular F2 campaign. I don't know if that has any bearing on it or if they made Reborn even harder than F2's campaign or anything..

Does anyone know if you have to start a new game for it to take affect or should it work on my current hard playthough even if I started it before the patch was applied?

I don't have the patch myself, but I think you'll have to start a new game.

And if you're playing the new Hard mode and claiming to not see any difference...you're either too good, or boasting.

No man I'm definitely not trying to fool anyone lol.. That's great news the difficulty has been jacked up so much! I wish I would've known that you had to start a game b/c honestly I had seen little to no difference on my current playthrough before and after the patch.

Honestly, I think the furthest in the game I got was where the mutant guys were running around the level after the one in the chair sends all of those troops after you. Even though it's a great game and has great atmosphere, I just wasn't having fun running through everybody on hard mode, and as other games came out, I played F2 less and less. If what you say is true about how hard the game should now be, it's definitely worth starting a new game and actually beating it this time.

I didn't mind the difficulty, because I wanted to press on with the story and have fun being a paranormal Neo. But then again, I'm a masochist who always plays on the easiest or insanely hardest setting, so I'm annoyed that I'm missing out on the new difficulty.

Maybe F.E.A.R. 3 will bring us an "Ultra Extreme" mode.

(Actually, there are a couple of games which have 'fake difficulties'. iD Software, for instance, has a "Nightmare" mode which either causes the monsters to respawn and become twice as fast (Doom 1 and 2) or give the player a health-regenerating soulcube at the start and take off five health points from them every five seconds (Doom 3). And the Resident Evil 1 remake had a mode where the monsters were invisible. That's just cheap. I want the AI to be stronger, more intelligent, more numerous and more damaging, but I don't want them to do anything that breaks the story.)

I can appreciate that, although it's not like they had much to work with in doom 1&2 AI-wise you know. As far as fear goes, If they simply made the enemies weapons do more damage, that would be good enough lol. They don't have to get super tricky with it or anything.. just make the guns hurt more. Not to mention, largely decrease the number of med packs that are laying around. Those are largely responsible for making the game easy, because I have like 7 med packs at any given time, and I'm never afraid of getting killed, which, in turn, takes away from the atmosphere and horror of the game.

One of the things that contributed to Resident Evil 4's success was the fact that you could easily get killed at any time, and there was never an ample amount of health items just laying around. I believe that, for me, difficulty is one of the reasons that I will enjoy a game, or get bored with it. Res 4 was quite difficult, but that just makes the gameplay all the more rewarding when you accomplish something.

Doom 3's Nightmare mode is just unfair. The constant health loss? Damn. If I die in a game, I want it to be because I suck, and not because the developers are sadistic monsters. Hard mode was bad enough, with the maps constantly spamming me with monsters. Sometimes, to relieve stress, I had to just go into the empty test map and beat up spawned monsters until I was happy. Bind "spawn zombie" to a key, give yourself a chainsaw and go to town -- better than therapy! Or alternatively, see how many you can spawn without making yourself crash.

Also, I kept spawning Sabaoth because I really liked his opening line. WELCOME TO THE MESS HALL! It's so deliciously corny.

I don't think so. Or if it was, maybe you need to start a new game, or something. I remember seeing the health icon change and... I don't remember there being a shift in the difficulty although I may have been playing on Normal at the time. It wasn't until later that I really felt the strain of Hard mode... man, if someone taped me during one of my gaming spaz sessions, it'd be a horrorshow....

Is there an official thread about that patch somewhere that clarifies whether or not you need to start a new game?

No, but you could make one, and ask the developers. Marauder is usually pretty on the ball with that sort of thing, you should get an answer quickly.

Come to think of it, I never did finish the game. I'll have to restart, now, though.

If it's any consolation, it's because my game files were deleted (long story) and I didn't want to replay the entire game to get to the final couple of levels.
